The Dungeons and Dragons Movie Trailer has just been released. We have watched the video and here you will find our opinion on the trailer.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

First of all, we can say that this movie has the potential to become everything. It can be good can be bad or become so bad that it is bad again. The trailer doesn’t give away to much.

Story

In the trailer, Chris Pine, who seems to be the main character of the movie, explains that they have stolen an object from the wrong person. A Lich with a red coat can be seen in the next scene. He is carrying a red horn. In another scene, the group is holding this horn. Obviously they have stolen it from the Lich. The Lich will be the main villain in Honor Among Thieves.

Classes

Bard

No class is specially mentioned in the trailer. But given what we have seen we can assume some classes. In the last scene, it becomes obvious that Chris Pine will be a bard. He seems like the comic relief of the movie. In another scene, he says that he is responsible for the plan. The seriousness and comic will be hard to balance in the movie. We think that Honor Among Thiefes is more of a comedy than it is a fantasy movie. They seem to want everyone to enjoy the movie and not just D&D Experts. This becomes more clear with the next class.

Druid

The Dungeons and Dragons Movie Trailer shows Sophia Lillis as a Tiefling Druid. You might know her from the movie IT. She stated that she is a hugely critical role fan. We don’t know if that is true or just a marketing stunt. We see her shapeshifting into an owlbear. However, this seems to be an emotional trigger. D&D experts know that druids can’t shapeshift into owlbears. But it is nice to see one in the trailer and the CGI just looks amazing. You can skip frame by frame through the scene and won’t notice a mistake.

Barbarian

Furthermore, we are introduced to the character played by Michelle Rodriguez. We see her fighting and forging an axe. It is pretty clear that she will be playing a Barbarian. We hope fot awesome fight scenes with this true fighter.

Black Dragon

Within the first seconds, we are introduced to a black dragon. He flies over a battlefield and spits acid on the soldiers. This seemed very new to us, as dragons alsways used to fight with fire in fantasy movies. Not in Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves. They seemed to really have looked up the lore of a black dragon in D&D.

Red Dragon

In a lava Dungeon, we see another dragon. It isn’t very clear but we assume it is a red dragon, as he lives by the lava and uses fire to fight. It is really awesome to see the unique styles of the dragons. The red dragon doesn’t look anything like the black dragon before. The heroes fight with this dragon. We are hyped to see what happens in this scene. Hopefully they rolled a Nat20 here.

Golden Dragon

We also do get a glimpse of a golden dragon. However, we doubt that this is really one. His skin look more made of stone. Also golden dragons are not really known for fighting. Here we see one preparing for battle. It is more likely that this is a stone golem shaped like a dragon.

Watchspider

If you don’t pay close attention you will miss the watchspider in the trailer. It is climbing up a tree in the forest. Obviously, they are keeping an eye out for their master.

Owlbear

The owlbear is the only Monster that is named in the Dungeons and Dragons movie trailer. It seems to be a fan service as well as an interesting thing for new viewers. The druid shapeshifts into one and fights off some guards. It is a typical D&D scene as we all know it.

Displacer Beast

Chris Pine as the bard is seen facing off a displacer beast. They are scary hunters and trick their enemies into seeing things they want them to see. It is a pretty exotic monster for the first D&D movie.  The panther-like monster is seen fighting in what looks like an arena with our heroes.

Gelatinous cube

Also within the arena is a gelatinous cube. Our group of adventurers escapes into one as they fight against the displacer beast. If this is a smart idea is to be seen. As these monsters are 10 feet wide flesh eating cubes.

The Mimic

The last monster we see is a mimic fighting against the barbarian. It is one of the most well-known monsters in Dungeons and Dragons.  We already thought that we would see one.

Conclusion

Personally I am very hyped for this upcoming movie. We get to see a lot of places and spells like slow and dimension door in action. However, I am a bit critical of the tone of the movie. It seems like they try to become a new marvel movie but just with Dungeons and Dragons.  I have caught myself thinking: “This is just like Guardians of the galaxy”. And it is. A group of outlaws is on their way to save the world. Maybe something less big would have been better. Like a smaller enemy and not a BBEG who wants to destroy the world in the first movie. D&D campaigns can take up to years before you face such an enemy. And what happens next. Someone who wants to destroy the universe? I think they are starting to fast here.

However I am exicted to see the places, monsters. characters. and spells in a well-made CGI and not just in my imagination. Hopefully, this movie will help Dungeons and Dragons more than it will hurt it. Leave a comment down below about what you think of the Dungeons and Dragons Movie trailer.
